2005 WI HS Championships

On an absolutely gorgeous Memorial Day, Memorial High School hosted the 1st Wisconsin State Championship. The tournament was attended by 7 open teams (one team agreed to split so we would have 8 teams) and 2 women’s teams.

The Women’s team played their championship at noon and the Mahadivas defeated the Queen B’s 13-2, with the Queen B’s getting the spirit award.

In the open division the teams were broken into 2 pools with the top 2 teams from each pool advancing into the Championship Bracket. In the A pool the top seed; Madison West was upset by New Trier 10-13, giving New Trier the pool. In the B pool, the top followed seed with Madison Memorial taking the pool and Edgewood coming in second. In the first semi-final Edgewood and New Trier had a hotly contested game with New Trier able to hold off Edgewood’s deep game enough to gain a capped 12-9 victory. In the other semi-final Madison West and Madison Memorial meet for the fourth time in the spring, with West holding a 2-1 advantage coming in to the State Championship. Both teams were beat-up and exhausted from Easterns the previous weekend (were West had knocked Memorial out in pre-quarters). With a strong second half Memorial was able to win the game 13-7.

The finals pitted a Wisconsin team vs. an Illinois team for the Wisconsin state championship. The game was back and forth with Memorial recovering from and Early New Trier lead. With the score 11-9 Memorial the game was capped to 13. New Trier quickly came out and scored the next two points to get it to 11-11. Memorial was able to respond winning the last two points to take the championship (and clean sweep of both divisions for Memorial high school). After one of the worst single days in Memorial Ultimate history at Easterns, Memorial had rebounded very strongly to finish the season going 8-1.
